What Does a Chiropractic Physician Actually Do?

A chiropractic physician examines how your joints and the muscles around them are moving, identifies where movement has been lost or has become painful, and treats it with manual techniques, exercise, and supporting therapies.

The most commonly known part of chiropractic treatment is the adjustment, which is a controlled, specific force applied to a joint that is not moving properly. It often produces an audible release, and that sound is gas coming out of solution in the joint fluid, not anything shifting into place. The adjustment is a smaller part of the work than its reputation suggests. Most of what happens across a course of chiropractic care is soft-tissue work, targeted exercise, load progression, and teaching you what to do between visits.

Our chiropractic physicians work alongside the medical side of the practice instead of separately from it. A patient whose presentation turns out to need imaging, prescribing, or an interventional procedure does not have to start again somewhere else with somebody who was not there for the first exam.

Injuries and Conditions We Treat With Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care here is aimed at musculoskeletal problems, and it is helpful to know specifically which ones.

  • Neck. Whiplash and cervical sprain and strain, facet joint irritation, cervicogenic headache, and the neck pain that comes from a sustained working posture or long periods of driving.
  • Low back and pelvis. Lumbar sprain and strain, facet syndrome, sacroiliac joint pain, disc herniation and bulging discs, and sciatica where a disc or joint is irritating a nerve root.
  • Mid-back and ribs. Thoracic joint restriction and the rib joint irritation that follows a seat belt load or a fall, which is often mistaken for something more alarming because of where it is felt.
  • Shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, elbow, and wrist problems, including bursitis, tendinitis, and the movement restrictions left behind by an old injury.

What chiropractic care here is not aimed at is general illness. Our doctors treat injuries and musculoskeletal conditions, and we say so plainly instead of implying a broader scope. The full range across the practice is on our injury clinic page.

Symptoms That Suggest a Musculoskeletal Cause

Some presentations point clearly toward a mechanical problem, and these are the ones to bring in.

Pain that changes with position or movement, and is better in some postures than others, is usually mechanical. So is stiffness that is worst after a period of not moving, like first thing in the morning or after a long drive.

A joint that feels blocked at a particular point in its range, a neck that turns further one way than the other, and pain that reproduces on a specific movement every time are all findings a physical examination can locate.

Headache that starts at the base of the skull and travels forward, particularly after a neck injury, is useful to know about. A meaningful share of persistent headaches after a crash are coming from the upper cervical joints instead of the head.

Radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness needs examining sooner. It does not necessarily mean anything serious, and it does change what the examination looks for and how quickly a decision about imaging gets made.

One more pattern gets dismissed and should not. Pain on one side only, in a body that used to feel even, is a finding and not a quirk. Asymmetry after an injury usually means one side took a load the other did not, and the restriction it leaves behind is the thing most likely to recur months later once the original soreness has gone.

When Chiropractic Care Is Not the Right Answer

A page like this is more useful when it says where the limits are, so here they are.

Chiropractic care is not the treatment for a fracture, an infection, a tumor, an inflammatory arthritis in an active phase, or a progressive neurological deficit. Part of the examination exists to identify those, and identifying one means changing course instead of proceeding.

Certain findings mean stopping and referring on. Loss of bladder or bowel control, saddle numbness, rapidly progressing weakness, or unexplained weight loss alongside back pain all fall into that category.

Some patients need a modified approach instead of none at all. Osteoporosis, long-term steroid use, recent surgery, anticoagulant medication, and certain vascular conditions all change which techniques are appropriate, which is one reason the history matters as much as the examination and why we ask about your prescriptions before anyone touches you. None of that is a reason to avoid being examined. It is a reason for the first visit to be a proper examination instead of a treatment appointment with an examination attached.

Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Your first visit is longer than the ones that follow, because most of it is examination.

Your chiropractic physician takes the history first: how the problem started, whether there was a specific event, what makes it better or worse, what you have stopped doing, and what your previous injuries and general health look like.

Then the physical work. Posture and movement observed, range of motion measured joint by joint instead of estimated, strength and reflexes tested, sensation checked, orthopedic tests run, and the individual spinal segments palpated to find which ones reproduce your symptoms.

Imaging is ordered where the examination raises a question it can answer, not routinely. Digital X-ray is available in the practice, and MRI is at our University Boulevard South location in Jacksonville. What happens at your first visit is set out separately if you would rather know in advance.

Treatment usually starts at that first appointment once the examination is complete, along with a plan and a clear statement of what would change it.

Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Hurt?

Most people describe an adjustment as uncomfortable at most instead of painful. Your clinician explains what a technique involves before using it and adapts or replaces it if you do not tolerate it. Some soreness for a day afterwards is common, particularly in the first week, and it behaves more like the ache after unfamiliar exercise than like the original injury.

Tell your clinician if anything is sharply worse afterward. That is not expected, and it changes the technique or the plan.

There is no requirement to have any particular technique. If you would rather not be adjusted at all, say so, and the plan gets built from soft-tissue work, rehabilitation, and the supporting therapies instead.

Chiropractic Care From the Same Clinician Every Visit

Green Cove Springs has a single clinic located on Branscomb Road, and Dr. John D’Amico is the chiropractor there. While this may seem like a small detail, it actually has an impact on how your care is evaluated.

When you start chiropractic care, your progress is assessed using specific measurements taken during your first appointment. This includes checking your range of motion in different directions, assessing muscle strength in various groups, and identifying which spinal segments trigger your symptoms. After four weeks, these measurements are taken again to see if the treatment plan is effective.

However, the accuracy of these comparisons depends on the consistency of the clinician taking the measurements. If two different practitioners assess the same neck, the results might differ slightly, not due to negligence, but because there’s a natural variation in measurements. In a clinic where multiple clinicians are involved, this variation can make it challenging to distinguish between a true improvement and just a difference in measurement.

In this clinic, the same clinician who performs your initial assessment will also be the one to measure your progress later on. This continuity minimizes discrepancies in the data we rely on. As a result, when we tell you that your numbers have changed, you can trust that they have.

It's also important to plan your appointment times carefully, since a single-clinic schedule can be tight. It's a good idea to book your follow-up appointments a week or two in advance during your first visit, rather than scheduling them one at a time.

Where your care needs the medical side, meaning imaging decisions, injections, or prescribing, our medical doctor and nurse practitioner cover all locations and work from the same treatment plan. You are not being handed to a different practice.

What a Course of Chiropractic Care Involves

Frequency is higher at the start and drops as you take on more of the work yourself. That shape is clinical, not commercial.

Early visits address joint restriction and the guarding around it, while tissue is still remodeling and movement patterns are still setting. As range and tolerance return, the emphasis shifts toward loading, strengthening, and the exercises you do at home between appointments.

Chiropractic care sits alongside the rest of the practice instead of in place of it. Physical medicine and rehab cover the strengthening and progression side, and spinal decompression is used for disc-related presentations at the affected level.

Supporting therapies are used where they fit the presentation: photobiomodulation laser, shockwave and PiezoWave, TECAR, HEIT, electrical muscle stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound. Which of these appear in your plan depends on the examination, not on a standard package. The plan gets reviewed against the measurements taken at your first visit. If those numbers are not moving by the point they should be, the right response is to change the approach or investigate further, and to say so instead of booking another block.

A reasonable question to ask any clinic, including this one, is what the exit looks like. You should get a straight answer about roughly how many visits are anticipated before the plan is reassessed, what would count as good progress, and what would count as enough progress to stop. Where that answer is vague at the outset, it usually stays vague at week twelve.

What You Do Between Appointments

Most of the work in a course of chiropractic care happens when you are not in the building, which is not what people expect to be told.

You will leave the first visit with two or three specific things to do, and the number stays small deliberately. A program of eight exercises gets abandoned in a week, and three that actually get done beat eight that do not.

Expect the exercises to change as you improve, because their job changes. Early ones restore movement and calm things down, middle ones rebuild the deep stabilizing control that switched off, and later ones load the area in ways that resemble whatever you actually need to do.

You will also get advice about position and habit that is specific to your findings instead of generic. How you are sleeping, how you are getting in and out of a car, and how long you are sitting before you move all matter more when a segment is irritated.

Tell us honestly if you have not been doing them. A plan that is not being followed and a plan that is not working look identical on paper and need completely different responses.

What the Spine Is Doing, and Why Movement Matters

A short explanation of the anatomy makes the rest of a treatment plan make sense.

The spine is a column of vertebrae separated by discs, with a pair of small joints at the back of every level called facet joints. Those facets guide and limit how each segment moves, and they carry a dense nerve supply, which is why an irritated one can hurt a great deal without anything being structurally damaged.

Around all of that sit two layers of muscle doing different jobs. The large superficial muscles move you, and a deeper layer of small stabilizers holds each segment steady during that movement. The deep layer is the one that goes quiet after an injury. It switches off quickly in response to pain, does not switch back on by itself once the pain settles, and its absence is a large part of why people who felt better at week four are back at week twelve, having done nothing obviously wrong.

That is the reasoning behind exercise being a required part of the plan instead of an optional extra. Hands-on treatment can restore movement to a restricted joint, and only loading restores the muscular control that keeps it there.

Do I Need a Referral to See a Chiropractor in Florida?

No. You can be seen directly, and our Green Cove Springs clinic takes walk-in patients on weekdays. After a car accident, there is a further point worth knowing. Under Florida’s no-fault law, a chiropractic physician licensed under chapter 460 is one of the providers who can deliver the initial services and care your auto insurance benefits depend on. Those benefits are available only where the injured person receives initial services and care within 14 days of the accident.

So being seen by a chiropractic physician inside that window satisfies the statutory requirement. People are often told otherwise, which costs them the benefit. Our crash-specific page on chiropractic care after a crash covers what to expect in more detail.

What Chiropractic Care Will Not Fix

Being straight about the limits makes the rest of the page more useful, so here is the honest version.

Chiropractic care does not straighten a spine permanently, and it does not put anything back in place that had come out. Discs do not slip, and vertebrae do not move out of alignment and get pushed back. What treatment does is restore movement to segments that have stopped moving well, calm the tissue irritated around them, and rebuild the muscular control that keeps things there.

It also will not undo degenerative change. Disc height loss and arthritic change are permanent; they happen to everybody, and they are often present in people with no symptoms at all. What is treatable is the irritation, the stiffness, and the loss of control layered on top of them, and that is usually the entire difference between comfortable and not.

It is not a substitute for medical care where a medical problem is driving the symptoms. Part of the examination exists to identify that, and where we find it, we say so and refer on.

And it is not a permanent arrangement. Some people choose to come in periodically once they are better, and that is a reasonable personal decision. What it should never be is a plan you were told you needed indefinitely without a clear reason and a clear alternative.

Symptoms That Need an Emergency Room, Not a Clinic

Some symptoms need an emergency room instead of any clinic appointment.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for loss of consciousness, a headache that keeps worsening, repeated vomiting, confusion or trouble speaking, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe or quickly worsening pain, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Clay County’s trauma center is HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital, north of this city, so call 911 and let the responders decide where somebody goes.

If none of that applies and you are stiff, restricted, aching, or simply not recovering the way you expected, an examination is the reasonable next step.

Will Insurance Cover Chiropractic Care?

It depends on how you were hurt. After a car accident in Florida, your own auto insurance covers medical care as long as you are seen within 14 days, and a chiropractic physician can provide that initial care. For a work injury, workers’ compensation usually applies and has its own rules about which doctor you see. For everything else, health insurance is the normal route.

We see patients with or without insurance. If you do not have coverage, call 904-783-0008 and ask about our Affordable Plans.

Bring whatever cards you have to the first visit and our team will explain what applies to your situation before treatment starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractic physician in Florida?

No, you can be seen directly, and our Green Cove Springs clinic takes walk-in patients on weekdays.

Does an adjustment hurt?

Most people find it uncomfortable at most. Your clinician explains what a technique involves beforehand and adapts it if you do not tolerate it.

Will I need X-rays before treatment?

Not as a routine treatment. Imaging is ordered when the examination raises a specific question it can answer.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on the findings and how you respond, and it is tracked by repeating your baseline measurements instead of a set number.

How Injury Care Centers Delivers Chiropractic Care in Green Cove Springs

Our practice has treated injuries and nothing else since 2010, and chiropractic care has been part of how we do it from the start.

That structure is the point and not a detail. Injury Care Centers combines chiropractic care, physical medicine, athletic training, and medical input inside a single treatment plan, with digital X-ray in the building and MRI at our University Boulevard South location, so a patient whose presentation changes does not get handed to a different practice and asked to explain it again.

Come to Branscomb Road on any weekday, call 904-783-0008 with a question first, or find addresses and hours for all our locations.
