Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome is a chronic muscle disorder in which the piriformis muscle in the buttocks irritates the sciatic nerve. Compression of the sciatic nerve could be caused by pressure on the piriformis muscle while sitting in a car, running, or climbing stairs. This uncommon syndrome can be identified by intense pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks or down the leg.

Pain or numbness in the buttocks or leg

Pain that worsens when sitting for a long time

Pain while climbing stairs

Pain while walking

Pain while running

Treatment Options

Treatment for this disorder can include medication, prescriptions, massage therapy, physiotherapeutic exercise, and PNF stretching. During your diagnosis, our doctors will evaluate your symptoms and trauma history, and depending on the severity, we may recommend a variety of therapy options. If the pain is severe, we may prescribe medications to reduce inflammation and pain.
