SPRAINS AND STRAINS

Sprains and strains are the most common type of sports-related injuries. These injuries occur to ligaments, muscle fibers, or tendons, which anchor muscles to bones. When ligaments move in the wrong direction, they can pull or tear, causing a sprain. Falling, twisting, or getting hit can all cause a sprain. Athletes often suffer ankle, knee, wrist, and elbow sprains. Strains can happen suddenly or develop over time.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Sprains and strains can be painful and may require a brace to heal. You can reduce the risk of sprains and strained muscles by warming up and stretching properly before engaging in strenuous activity. Initial treatment may involve resting the injured area, icing it, wearing a compression brace, or taking medication. Later treatment may include exercise and physical therapy.
