Torn Ligaments

Ligament injuries occur when the pieces of tissue connecting bones become damaged or torn. These tears can happen in any joint, and athletes are specifically vulnerable to these injuries. Injuries are most common when the ligaments around a particular joint are at full-stretch, causing them to tear away from the bone.

Symptoms
  • Sudden onset of pain and swelling
  • Joint instability
  • Impaired function of the joint
  • Severe swelling
  • Bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling within 24 hours
  • Looseness in the joint
  • Inability to put weight on the injured area
Treatment Options

Treatments for ligament tears can include prescriptions, medications, massage therapy, medical procedures, and MRIs. Our doctors will analyze your injuries to determine the intensity of a sprain. If it is mild, rest and icing the affected area may be recommended. For mild or extreme ligament tears, a brace, supportive taping, and medication may be prescribed to ease the pain or help with the healing process. Ligament tears can take 6 to 12 weeks to fully heal.
